Yunnan Agricultural University located in the most southwestern region of China, taking advantage of the aboudant bio-resources and diverse national minorities, and making full use of Yunnan unique geographical position and climate condition, YAU has, indeed, developed into a multi-discipline teaching and scientific research university over 70 years. Its coordinated development in Agronomy, Engineering, Economics, Management, Scinece, Liberal Arts, Law and Education make it an indispensable element in Yunnan Province’s economic, social and cultural development.

At present, YAU has 1,541 academic and support staff members, 132 of whom are professors, and 386 are associate professors. 402 of the aforementioned are tutors for students in master’s degree programs, and 34 are tutors for those in doctoral degree programs. Some YAU professors won one national and 7 provincial teaching master titles. Former president, Professor ZHU Youyong, is one of the Academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences. There are more than 16,000 full-time 4-year undergraduate and 3-year diploma students, 1,483 master students, 123 doctoral students, 118 oversea students and 8,351 part-time students.

The university has effectively combined research on important scientific subjects with the training of personnel with a high level of specialized knowledge and professional skill as demanded by the country's socialist modernization. It strives not only for improvements in teaching and research work, but also for the promotion of interaction and mutual promotion among various disciplines.

By emphasizing Yunnan’s biodiversity, optimizing and adjusting the discipline structure, YAU has formed 17 key disciplines at the provincial and ministry level. There are 3 national centers, 6 provincial key laboratories and research centers, 5 provincial university’s key laboratories and research centers and 2 provincial training centers.

For 70 years through the efforts of several generations, YAU has been taking the advantages of rich natural resources and rewarded a series of pronounced achievements in its key disciplines. YAU’s research achievements rank high among the academic institutes of Yunnan Province.

The distinctive characteristics and regional advantages of YAU have received the attention of international community. YAU carries out scientific cooperation projects, talent cultivation and academic exchanges with 32 country’s 118 foreign universities and international organizations including The UK, The United States, France, Japan, The Netherlands, Korea, Australia, Thailand, and Vietnam. YAU has been carrying out joint student programs with Van Hall Larenstein, Wageningen UR for Chinese students pursuing Dutch BSc degree; Vinh University and Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry, Vietnam for Vietnamese students pursuing Chinese BSc degree; with the University of Wolverhampton, UK, and FESIA, France for Bachelor, Master, and Doctor degrees; and with the University of La Trobe, Australia, Kagoshima University and Kyoto Prefectural University, Japan for short-term student exchange. There are more than 20 ongoing joint research projects. During the past few years, YAU has engaged 116 famous national and international academicians, experts and professors of higher academic attainments as guest professors and co-sponsored twenty-four academic conferences. All these activities combined to make YAU an active member of the international education community.

Thus Yunnan Agricultural University has become one of the provincial key universities for teaching and research in Yunnan Province. The spirits of innovation, creation, dedication and contribution have also been predominant. The university enjoys a strong academic atmosphere，active academic thought，and a lively campus culture. All of these help to present a harmonious and prosperous educational environment.
